“When the feet are uncomfortable, so is the mind, so is the body, so is the soul.” This is the motto that Donald Pliner stated himself, and it’s the one that he’s lived by and created his brand by. And it all started when Pliner was just 24 years old.
After working at his family’s store, Pliner’s Florsheim Family Shoe Stores, Donald had a vision of his own and set up his own shop in 1967. This one was not in Chicago, as his family’s was, but in one of America’s biggest shopping districts, Beverly Hills. From there he worked with many of America’s biggest designers, including Right Bank Clothing Co. and Erica, all while maintaining and operating his own stores.
It was in the late 80s that Donald wanted to create the best mens luxury clothing and accessories and so, he created his own line of footwear. These shoes were incredibly distinctive, as they were an all-over elastic shoe to provide the utmost in comfort. Yet, they still had the stylish and elegant look that Pliner had already become known for. Since then, Pliner has only added onto that name and design and in 2004, he was inducted into the Footwear News Hall of Fame.
Today, the Pliner name still stands for excellence and in the Manhattan headquarters, shoes are treated more like art than footwear.
