Bespoke vs. Made to Measure
When people refer to custom clothing, they often confuse the terms “made to measure” and “bespoke.” So what’s the difference between the two?
Garments that are made precisely to a customer’s measurements are often referred to as being made to those specific measurements. However the different patterns, styles, fabrics, and colors will still generally be predetermined by the store or the manufacturer making them. The biggest difference between these garments and bespoke clothing is that they are still made from pre-existing patterns.
Bespoke garments on the other hand, are entirely made according to what the customer wants and needs. No fabrics or patterns are chosen until the customer chooses it for himself, and it is then measured and cut according to the client’s exact measurements. While this is true with all custom-made clothes, only bespoke garments are entirely “from scratch.”
Over the past several decades, the difference between bespoke clothing and other made-to-order garments has become almost non-existent with custom clothes falling into the same category.
